Tour Grading
We grade every tour so you can pick the walk that matches your fitness and experience. Here's how it works.
Our grading system uses 1 to 4 bootprints to indicate the physical demands of each walk. The grade takes into account daily distance, total ascent, terrain type, and trail conditions. Every route has been walked and graded by Cliff personally, so the ratings reflect real-world experience rather than theory.
Over 90% of our walkers are aged 50+. Whatever your fitness level, there's an Irish walk for you.

Preparing for Your Walk
Build Up Gradually
Start training 6–8 weeks before your trip. Begin with shorter walks and gradually increase distance and elevation. If you can comfortably walk 20km with a daypack over hilly terrain, you're ready for our moderate routes.
Right Footwear
Waterproof walking boots with ankle support are essential for all grades above Easy. Break them in well before your trip. Bring blister plasters and two pairs of walking socks. Trail shoes are fine for the Barrow Way.
Weather Ready
Irish weather is famously changeable. Pack waterproof jacket and trousers, sun protection, and layers you can add or remove. On mountain routes, wind and mist can reduce visibility quickly — bring a head torch.
Not Sure? Just Ask
Cliff has walked every route personally and can recommend the perfect trail for your ability. There's no judgement — we want you to enjoy every step. Drop us a line and we'll help you choose.
