The Beara Way Walking Holiday — 6 Days (Moderate)
Glengarriff to Eyeries — Bere Island, Allihies and the Copper Coast
The classic Beara Way week — six days to walk from Glengarriff's oak woods on Bantry Bay to the painted houses of Eyeries on the northern coast. Four walking days, 70km, covering the southern coast, a ferry out to Bere Island, the copper-mine village of Allihies and the wild Atlantic north coast to Eyeries.
Day 3 is one of the most unusual days in Irish walking — a short ferry crosses the harbour to Bere Island, where a loop walk takes you past Martello towers, First World War gun batteries and Second World War lookout posts. The island has no through traffic; the military heritage sits quietly in the grass. Island pub at midday, evening ferry back.
Day 5 is the most scenic leg of the Beara Way: the Allihies to Eyeries coastal path — high above the Atlantic with Cod's Head panoramas to the west and the Skellig Islands on the horizon to the north. Eyeries is one of Ireland's most photographed villages — a row of pastel-painted houses above the northern shore.
Moderate grade on waymarked Beara Way paths and quiet lanes, with daily stages of 12–21km. Luggage moves daily; you walk with a daypack.
Highlights
Hungry Hill and the Mare's Tail
Day 2 passes under Hungry Hill (685m), Beara's highest peak. The Mare's Tail waterfall drops 200m down its north face — one of Ireland's tallest single-drop falls, visible from the path below.
Castletownbere fishing port
Ireland's second-largest whitefish port, still working. Trawlers at the quay, MacCarthy's Bar for dinner, and the ruins of Dunboy Castle on the headland above the harbour.
Bere Island military heritage
A short ferry from Castletownbere brings you to Bere Island — a quiet, car-free island with a remarkable military past. The loop walk passes Martello towers, First World War gun batteries and Second World War observation posts, all now silent in the grass with wide views across the harbour.
Allihies Copper Mine Museum
The village of Allihies was the centre of Beara's 19th-century copper-mining industry. The restored museum tells the story of Cornish engineers and Atlantic isolation. Ballydonegan Beach below the village has red sand and a long Atlantic horizon.
Who Is This For?
Your fitness level
This tour suits regular walkers comfortable with 12–21km on rough coastal paths and rural roads over four consecutive days. Two significant climbs (up to ~350m of ascent). You should be steady on uneven ground and happy in open country.
The right kind of traveller
You want Ireland's wildest peninsula on a longer loop — woodland, mountain, copper-mine coast and painted villages in one week. Evenings in Beara pubs, mornings with sea fog burning off the Caha Mountains.
Solo walkers, couples and small groups
The fully supported self-guided format works for all three. Maximum eight walkers per group.

Arrival in Glengarriff
The Beara Way begins tomorrow.
Arrive in Glengarriff, gateway to Beara. The village sits in a sheltered harbour ringed by native oak woodland and the Caha Mountains. Collect your route notes and waterproof maps from your B&B. A walk to the Blue Pool or the Bamboo Park makes for a pleasant first evening — Glengarriff is subtropical by Irish standards, sheltered and lush.

Glengarriff to Castletownbere
A long combined day covering the best of the southern Beara coast — from the oak woods of Glengarriff Nature Reserve all the way to the fishing port of Castletownbere. Down through Adrigole, then west along the coast past the ruins of Dunboy Castle and the harbour views to Bere Island. Dinner at MacCarthy's Bar.

Bere Island day trip
A short morning ferry from Castletownbere crosses to Bere Island — a quiet, car-free island in the mouth of Berehaven harbour with a remarkable military history. The loop walk takes in Martello towers from the Napoleonic era, First World War gun batteries (when this was a Royal Navy base), and Second World War observation posts that watched the Atlantic convoys. All now silent in the grass, with views across to the Beara mainland.
Lunch at the island pub; evening ferry back to Castletownbere.
Distance: 12km. Ascent: ~150m.

Castletownbere to Allihies

Castletownbere to Allihies
West from Castletownbere on the copper-mine heritage trail over Miskish Mountain. Engine-house ruins, old tramway cuttings and drystone walls from the 19th-century mining settlements appear as you climb. The descent into Allihies is dramatic — the village appears below you between Ballydonegan Beach's red sand and the green hillside. Visit the Copper Mine Museum; walk to the beach at dusk.
Distance: 18km. Ascent: ~250m.

Allihies to Eyeries

Allihies to Eyeries
The most beautiful stage of the Beara Way — the northern coastal path above the Atlantic. The trail climbs out of Allihies with Cod's Head panoramas opening wide: ocean to the west, the Skellig Islands on the horizon to the north, old copper workings and long-abandoned stone farmsteads below. The descent into Eyeries follows the famous row of pastel-painted houses — pink, blue, mustard, green — strung along the northern shore.
Home to Milleens Cheese and Caureen's Bar. A short day that deserves a long evening.
Distance: 19km. Ascent: ~300m.
